What actually drives the difference

Three factors explain nearly all the gap between these profiles, in order of size:

  1. How many aircon units run, and for how long. This is the dominant variable. Going from one unit at 3 hours a day to three units averaging 6-8 hours pushes usage from roughly 150 kWh to 650 kWh, more than 4x, without changing anything else about the household.

  3. Household size and general appliance count. More people means more lighting, more laundry loads, more devices charging, but each of these individually is a small line item next to a single aircon unit run for several hours.
