Solar Panel Installment Plans in the Philippines

Installer installment plans are the most accessible way to fund solar in the Philippines. Approval is fast, documentation is light, and the plan is arranged as part of buying the system rather than as a separate errand.

That convenience is real and worth something. What you need to check is what it costs, because the answer is often not stated as a rate anywhere in the paperwork.

How to find the true cost

The single question that reveals it:

“What is the cash price if I pay in full today, and what is the total of all installments?”

The difference between those two numbers is the cost of the financing, whatever the plan is called.

A worked example on a 5kW system:

That is the number to compare against a bank. It may still be the right choice — but you should be choosing it knowingly rather than because the monthly figure looked manageable.

About “0% installment”

Sometimes genuine, sometimes not. The test is the same: ask what the cash price would be.

If paying cash today costs materially less than the sum of the installments, the plan is not 0% — the financing cost has simply been moved into the system price. If the cash price and the installment total are the same, it is real, and it is a good deal.

This is not necessarily dishonest; retail finance works this way in many industries. It only becomes a problem when you compare a “0%” plan against a bank loan’s stated interest rate and conclude the plan is cheaper. You would be comparing a disclosed rate against an undisclosed one.

A bank credit card promo is a different mechanism again — the bank funds it and the installer is paid in full up front, so the 0% is genuine but the term caps out at 36 months and the whole amount eats your credit limit. For members who qualify, Pag-IBIG is generally the cheapest route, and government employees should also look at the GSIS Ginhawa loan. Banks sit in the middle, with a disclosed rate — see BDO, BPI, Security Bank, and RCBC. Installer plans win on speed and accessibility, which genuinely matters if you are not eligible elsewhere or you want it settled this month.

Questions to ask before signing

  • What is the cash price versus the total of all payments?
  • Is the plan held by the installer or a finance partner? If a partner, who?
  • What is the deposit, and does a larger one reduce the total?
  • Are there early settlement penalties if you pay it off sooner?
  • What happens to my payments and my warranty if the installer closes?
  • Is the net metering fee and permit cost inside the financed amount or extra? See net metering cost.

That last one catches people. A plan financing the system but not the connection costs leaves a bill arriving at the worst moment.

The test that actually matters

Whatever you choose, compare the monthly payment against your monthly electricity saving.

A correctly sized system commonly removes around 90% of a bill. If your bill is ₱9,000 and solar takes ₱8,000 off it, a payment under ₱8,000 leaves you better off from month one — you have swapped a Meralco bill for a payment that eventually ends, on an asset that keeps producing for 25 years.

Should I put down a larger deposit?

Usually yes, if the plan charges for financing. A larger deposit reduces the financed amount and therefore the total cost. If the plan is genuinely 0% and the cash price is identical, there is less reason to.
