Solar Panels Not Charging the Battery: What to Check

A battery that will not charge is far more often a surplus or settings problem than a failure. Work through the causes in order of likelihood, because replacing a healthy pack is an expensive way to fix a configuration issue.
Start here: is there actually a surplus?
This is the cause people miss, and it is not a fault at all.
Your battery charges from generation left over after the house has taken what it needs. If your panels are producing 3kW and the household is drawing 3kW, there is nothing to store. The system is working perfectly and the battery stays where it is.
Check the inverter or app for three numbers at the same moment: generation, house consumption, and battery charge or discharge. If generation minus consumption is near zero, you have your answer.

Then check the charge settings
Charge voltage and current limits have to match the battery’s specification. If they are wrong, charging can stop entirely — or damage the pack, which is worse.
Settings get wrong most often:
- Just after installation, if the inverter was not configured for the specific battery
- After a firmware update, which occasionally resets parameters
- After a battery is swapped or added without reconfiguring
There may also be a deliberate cap. Many installers set the maximum charge below 100% because keeping lithium packs permanently full shortens their life. A battery that consistently stops at, say, 90% is very likely doing what it was told. That is good practice, and worth confirming rather than assuming a defect.
Settings changes are an installer job. Wrong values on a battery are not a cosmetic mistake.
Check the charge controller and DC side
On systems with a separate charge controller rather than an all-in-one hybrid inverter, the controller is a distinct point of failure. Check for:
- Fault lights or codes on the controller itself
- A tripped DC breaker between the array and the controller

Do not open anything or work on DC wiring yourself. The array is live whenever the sun is up, regardless of what breakers are set to.
Check what the battery is being asked to do
A few configuration questions worth asking your installer:
What is the charge priority? Self-consumption first is the usual Philippine default — the house takes what it needs, the battery gets the remainder, and any excess exports under net metering. Battery-first configurations exist and suit homes prioritising outage readiness over savings.
Is grid charging enabled, and should it be? Some systems can top the battery from the grid. That is useful before a forecast typhoon and expensive as a daily habit, since you are buying at about ₱14-15/kWh to store at a round-trip loss.
Is there a reserve setting? Many systems hold a minimum charge back for outage use. A pack that never discharges below 30% is probably configured that way deliberately.
When it really is the battery
Genuine failure is the least common cause, and it usually looks like:
- A fault code from the battery management system, not just the inverter
- A pack that will not accept charge at all despite confirmed surplus and correct settings
- Capacity that has dropped sharply rather than gradually — normal ageing is a slow fade, covered in how long do solar batteries last
- Visible swelling, heat, or damage — in which case stop using it and call someone immediately
