Why cooking appliances behave differently

Most of what a Philippine home runs on solar is either continuous (the refrigerator) or shiftable (the washing machine). Cooking is neither. It happens when people eat, and people eat at dinner.

That timing works against solar. Under net metering, power you export earns a credit of roughly ₱5-7/kWh while power you buy costs about ₱14-15/kWh. Cooking at 7pm means buying at the higher rate after selling your surplus at the lower one.

Cooking at midday, off your own generation, captures the full retail value. Where that is practical — cooking lunch, or preparing rice earlier and reheating — it is free money. Where it is not, the cost is small enough not to reorganise your life over.

The keep-warm habit

Worth noticing: keep-warm draws little but runs long. A cooker left on all afternoon can quietly use as much as the cooking did.

It is not a large sum, but it is entirely free to fix — switch it off once the rice is done. That is the same category of easy win as running fans instead of lowering the aircon setpoint.

On a battery
