The True Cost of Solar Ownership Over 25 Years in the Philippines

Payback tells you when a solar system stops costing you money. This page asks a different question: across the whole 25-year life of the equipment, what do you actually spend, and what do you actually get back?
For an ₱8,000/month household on a 5kW grid-tied system, the short version is that the installed price is almost the entire cost. One inverter replacement, a few cleanings a year, and a set of one-time connection fees at the start are the only other lines on the ledger, and together they are a small fraction of the first number.

What does 25 years of solar ownership actually cost?

The shape of that table is the finding. Line one is the large majority of everything you will ever spend on the system, which is why the installed cost breakdown deserves far more of your attention than the running costs do. People shopping for solar tend to worry about hidden lifetime expenses; the real risk is overpaying on day one.
Why the installed price dominates everything else
A 5kW grid-tied system installs for roughly ₱250,000-400,000 in 2026, or about ₱45,000-75,000 per kW. Panels and inverter together are more than half of that; mounting, wiring, labour, and permit handling make up the rest. The full line-by-line split is in the cost breakdown guide.
Two quotes for the same 5kW system can differ by ₱150,000, which is more than every post-install cost in the table above combined. That is worth sitting with. A ₱50,000 saving negotiated at the quote stage outweighs a decade of careful cleaning economics. If a quote comes in well under ₱45,000/kW, ask what panel and inverter brand is in it and whether permits and net metering filing are included, because those are the usual places a cheap number comes from.
What actually needs replacing, and when
The inverter, once. Not the panels.
String inverters commonly last 10-15 years, against panels rated for 25-30. That is a manufacturer-independent pattern, not a Philippine quirk: the US Department of Energy’s consumer guidance puts string inverters at “between 10-15 years” and notes they may need replacing during the panels’ lifetime. A replacement grid-tied string inverter costs ₱20,000-70,000 for the unit today, depending on size and brand — see the inverter price guide. Two honest caveats on that number:
- It is the price of the unit, not the installed price. Add an electrician’s time and, if the model changed, possible rewiring.
- It is a 2026 price for a purchase you will make around 2038. Nobody can quote you a 2038 inverter price. Budget the current figure and expect the real one to differ.
Microinverters are the exception worth knowing about: they tend to last closer to the panels’ lifespan, which removes the mid-life replacement but costs more per watt upfront. The tradeoff is covered in our inverter types guide.
Panels themselves do not get a line in the replacement column. They lose roughly 0.4-0.5% of output per year and still produce around 87-90% of their original rating at year 25, as covered in the degradation and lifespan guide. There is no cutoff date. Replacing them becomes a financial decision about output, not a repair.
What does the upkeep actually cost per year?
We cannot give you a peso figure for this, and we would rather say so than invent one.
Philippine rooftop solar needs cleaning a few times a year — frequent rain does most of the rinsing, so the dry season and visible buildup are what trigger it, not a calendar. Doing it yourself costs water, a soft brush, and your morning. Hiring it out is priced by system size, roof access, and provider, and we have not found a national rate we would stand behind. Two practical notes that do affect the number:
- Ask whether cleaning is bundled. Many installers fold it into a maintenance package, which turns an unpredictable line into a known one.
- Roof access drives the price more than system size does. A single-storey metal roof and a steep third-floor roof are different jobs.
There is no consumables cost, no fuel, no filters, and no scheduled servicing beyond that. Grid-tied solar has no moving parts.
The one-time costs at the start that people leave out
These land in year 0 alongside the install, and whether you pay them separately depends entirely on what your installer’s quote covers.
Net metering is a right, not a product — under RA 9513, systems up to 100 kW may connect and export. What costs money is getting connected: the application, the distribution impact study, the bidirectional meter, the LGU electrical permit, and the sealed single-line diagram from a licensed professional electrical engineer. Fees are set by each distribution utility through its own filings with the Energy Regulatory Commission and they change, so there is no national number to quote here. Ask your utility or installer for the current schedule in writing before you sign.
Insurance is the other one. Rooftop solar is usually treated as part of the building, so it may already fall under your homeowner’s policy — but only if you declare it and raise the sum insured to match. Typhoon and flood cover are frequently add-ons in the Philippines rather than defaults. What the system earns back over the same 25 years
A well-sized grid-tied system cuts a Philippine electric bill by 40-80%, not 100%, because exported power is credited at the generation rate of roughly ₱5-7/kWh rather than the retail rate you pay, and panels produce nothing at night. Held flat at today’s tariff for 300 months:

Against a ₱250,000-400,000 install and a ₱20,000-70,000 inverter replacement, the mid-range case nets out around ₱970,000 to ₱1,170,000 over 25 years, before the unpriced items above. Where you land inside that spread is decided almost entirely by how much of your generation you use during daylight rather than export.
Two things are deliberately left out of that arithmetic, and they push in opposite directions:
- Degradation pulls it down slightly. At 87-90% output in year 25, a ₱4,800/month saving in year one is worth roughly ₱4,200-4,300/month by the end, on the same tariff.
- Rising rates push it up, harder. Meralco’s all-in residential rate went from about ₱8.25/kWh in March 2021 to about ₱14.83/kWh by July 2026 — see the Meralco rate history. How a battery changes the ledger
A battery is the one addition that meaningfully alters the 25-year shape, because it is the only component you buy twice.

Home batteries run roughly ₱13,000-23,000 per usable kWh installed, so a 5kWh pack lands at ₱65,000-115,000 and a 10kWh pack at ₱130,000-230,000 — see the battery price guide. A LiFePO4 pack typically lasts 10-15 years in Philippine conditions, limited by cycle count rather than calendar age, so a 25-year owner replaces it once (battery lifespan). Lead-acid is far shorter, commonly 3-6 years, which is several replacements inside the same window.

Being explicit about this is more useful than filling the gaps with plausible numbers:
- Utility connection fees. Set per distribution utility, changed by regulatory filing. Ask yours.
- Professional cleaning and maintenance rates. No national figure we would publish. Quoted locally.
- Insurance premiums. Depend on your existing policy and declared sum insured.
- Future replacement prices. An inverter or battery bought in the late 2030s will not cost what it costs in 2026.

How this differs from payback period
Payback answers “when do I break even” and lands at 3 to 7 years for a typical grid-tied Philippine home, nearer 3-4 for high-bill Meralco households and 6-8 in lower-rate provincial areas. That is the right question when you are deciding whether to buy at all, and the payback period guide is where to answer it.
This page answers the question that comes after: having broken even in year four or five, what does the next twenty years look like? The answer is that almost nothing else is coming. One inverter, some cleaning, and the same output minus a few percent. That asymmetry — nearly all the cost at the front, nearly all the return spread across two decades — is the real argument for treating the install quote as the decision that matters and running your own numbers on the cost calculator before you sign anything.
